Have you been thinking about
putting on your own Team Roping
but not sure where to start?
Well
Information on the subject is scarce to
say the least! We, my Husband, I and
family have been producing
Jackpot
Roping's here at the Horseshoe Ranch
Arena for about 6 years. As to date in
October of 2009 we have totaled 448
ropings and counting. I have decided to
publish my knowledge and lend advice
to anyone interested in becoming a
producer.
What Arena? Do you want to put on small Jackpots at your own arena or do you want to put on a large roping at a
community center or large arena? Thats a good question! It is by far best to start out small if you have no prior
experience as a producer. Putting on a few round robins at the house with friends is a lot different than a big Pick
and Draw format. If you have your own arena, its best to use it! Community Arenas have rent and its usually not
handle cheap! So its best for your profit margin to use what you have. If your arena is not adequate and won't
handle commercial use than its best to rent one. Parking is always something to consider as well. My arena sits on
about 8 acres and is plenty big enough for our Jackpots. We usually have about 150 to 200 teams at our smaller
weekly about 10 ft wide. In the cold Oklahoma winter months (Dec, Jan, Mar) we rent an indoor barn, that is much
smaller. It is a County Expo barn and rents for $400.00 a day, that is a big cut if your attendance is under 200
teams. Arena Once you have decided on the arena, your ready to move on!!

Cattle are a big part of the roping. Not only do you need
cattle to put on a roping you need quality cattle and
plenty of them! United States Team Roping Rules state
you should have about 1/3 of the cattle to the teams
roping, so if you have 100 teams you need at least 25
head of cattle. This is just a guide line and does not mean
you must follow it, but it has a reason for the formula.
Cattle DO depreciate every time they run down the arena.
If you do not have an adequate number of cattle, the
cattle work harder, and depreciate faster. So all stock
contractors generally use this ratio. If you own your own
cattle you too should use this ratio, so you do not loose
money down the road. I have used cattle in every way
possible from owning them, leasing by the month and
leasing per event. I by far prefer the latter. Owning cattle
does have the advantage of making the profit the stock
contractor will make, but comes along with having to care
and maintain the cattle.

a lot of thought in it. Ropers are no doubt regional and
the area and see what other producers use, or if you
rope think about the ropings close to home? What
formats seem to get the most ropers, etc. What ever
format you use, will cause confusion among both your
ropers and secretaries, so make sure you are available
at the sign up desk to do a lot of explaining. It always
seems no matter how good you think your secretary
know whats going on, something will stump her. The
ropers seem to always have questions and yes most are
pretty self explanatory. But remember the more a roper
feels comfortable and welcome and informed, the more
money he is likely to spend and become a loyal customer.

one wisely. Remember it needs to be roper friendly BUT
on the other hand it MUST be producer friendly too, or its
not worth your time. My husband and son argued with
some of the formats I choose, because they were looking
at it like a roper NOT a producer. On the other hand I A
good format will really make you money, so choose had
to really listen to them as ropers and see if I could find
one to suit both sides.

Prizes, won't make or break you, but attention needs
to be given to this topic too. If you give out cheap
reputation will sink. But, ropers will still come to rope. I
know this, because I have seen a lot of it in our area.
There is a producer that continually gives out play tin
buckles, and Chinese headstalls and still manages to
pull in 500 teams. He gives out cheap prizes but
charges cheap fees and thats the kicker! If you must
go with the cheapest than charge accordingly!

Here at the HR Arena we pretty much stick with the
middle of the road prizes. We have done it every way
possible and it seems to work best for us to order
from the top of the budget lines. When we first
started out we ordered top of the line and tried to
charge higher fees. The ropers, didn't want high
dollar prizes, they wanted fees they could afford. If
your in an area that has money than try to give out
the best you can afford.

Shopping around for custom trophy prizes is daunting.
When you find a company you like, stick with them
and build a relationship with them. You will need this
relationship, if you ever need them in a hurry or to
get prizes on credit. Cut Above Buckles out of
Murrieta Ca are exceptional. We have used them for
years. They have the best price and outstanding
quality in all their economy lines. They have worked
with us in so many pinches, getting buckles out fast
and right to our front door, the day before the roping.
Cowboy Classic Saddlery is another one of our picks.
They too have really worked with us and have
exceptional quality at a great price. Most all the
trophy saddles pictured in this website are made by
Cowboy Classic Saddlery.

success of a team roping that needs attention.
Ropers will not come to your roping if they don't know
about it! Its as simple as that. Targeted advertising is
your best bang for your buck. Make flyers and take
under windshield is yet another important element in
the success of a team roping that needs attention.
wipers. Make sure your dates are not conflicting with
other producers in the area and be sure to ask if it is
okay to advertise. I have found every one to be very
helpful. Its kind of a catch 22 to advertise in the Dally
Times. Its Expensive but on the other hand can
generate a lot of business. The best for sure is
building a mailing list. It is simple and the best
advertising you can get.
